Pisas III Cabinet Commits to Diversifying Curaçao’s Economy in New Government Program

WILLEMSTAD The newly sworn-in Pisas III Cabinet has unveiled its government program for 2025–2029, outlining a clear commitment to diversify Curaçao’s economy beyond its heavy reliance on tourism. The goal is to develop three to four additional economic sectors that will significantly contribute to national production and government revenues.

The government, composed entirely of ministers from the MFK (Movementu Futuro Kòrsou) party following their parliamentary majority win, aims to implement an active economic policy. According to the program titled Rumbo pa 2030! Un kompromiso nobo ku pais Kòrsou (“Towards 2030! A New Commitment with Curaçao”), the strategy involves expanding Curaçao’s economic base through various initiatives.

Among the key measures are the introduction of a new system to guarantee private sector investments and foster partnerships with major investors via public-private partnerships (PPPs), particularly to develop new industries in the energy sector. Additionally, the government plans to enhance the area around Curaçao’s ports to increase export capacity.

The program stresses sustainable development as a central theme, promising “significant, stable, and diversified economic growth” alongside establishing a solid financial foundation. This foundation is crucial for addressing the country’s most pressing challenges, including economic vulnerability, poverty, a shortage of affordable housing, an aging population, and the related pressures on healthcare and social funds.

Reflecting on the progress made during the previous Pisas II Cabinet, the program highlights achievements such as strong economic growth, a sharp decline in unemployment, major improvements in public finances, better infrastructure, and enhanced recreational facilities across neighborhoods. Yet, it also acknowledges that Curaçao continues to face longstanding demographic, social, economic, and public health challenges.

As the new government embarks on this ambitious agenda, the focus will remain on ensuring that economic diversification drives sustainable prosperity and social well-being for Curaçao in the years ahead.
