WILLEMSTAD – The ongoing sewer problems in Pietermaai continue to be a major concern for local businesses and residents. The Curaçao Restaurant Association (CRA) and the Department of Public Works (OW) have discussed possible solutions, but a long-term structural fix remains elusive. While OW is working on plans for a new drainage system, the CRA is advocating for regular sewer maintenance and cleaning.
Blocked Drains and Overflowing Wastewater
Entrepreneurs in Pietermaai have long complained about severe blockages caused by grease buildup, wet wipes, and other waste clogging the system. Heavy rainfall frequently overwhelms the sewers, leading to wastewater flooding the streets. OW acknowledges the urgency of the problem and is assessing ways to improve the sewer infrastructure in Pietermaai and Punda.
Need for Better Waste Management
The CRA emphasizes that businesses must improve their waste disposal practices, particularly by avoiding the dumping of grease and oil into the sewer system. Restaurants are encouraged to install grease traps and have them emptied regularly, but there is currently little enforcement of these measures.
No Immediate Solution in Sight
Without a definitive solution, the sewer issues will persist. In the meantime, OW and CRA are working together to find short-term relief measures while a long-term fix is still being developed.
