Optimism about dispute regulation

WILLEMSTAD – There were high expectations prior to the Interparliamentary Consultation (IPKO) about a dispute regulation for the Caribbean parliamentary delegations of the countries of the kingdom, but in the end the consultations on St Maarten made no breakthrough at all.

The hope now is that the second chamber of the Dutch Parliament will adopt an arrangement in June, but that is far from certain. On Monday, the President of Parliament Mr. Millerson and delegation leader of the Curacao parliamentarians Mrs. Pauletta gave a press conference.

Both Millerson and Pauletta stated that the parties could not agree on a joint statement on the dispute regulation. Each parliamentary delegation maintains its own position on this complicated matter. Parties indicated that they hope a dispute settlement will come as soon as possible.

The next IPKO will be held in The Hague June 25-28. Shortly thereafter, the draft law on the dispute regulation as approved by the Kingdom Council of Ministers will be up for debate in the Dutch Parliament’s Second Chamber.

Members of the four Kingdom parliaments and the Ministers Plenipotentiary of the Caribbean countries will be able to participate in the debates on the draft law and submit motions and amendments during the debate.
