THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - Old tax debts in Curaçao will not be waived, according to State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen of Kingdom Relations and Digitization. In response to parliamentary questions regarding the revised tax collection policy, she clarified that while tax assessments can become time-barred, the debts cannot be waived entirely. 

The reason for these questions arises from Finance Minister Javier Silvania's decision to cancel old tax debts. Under the amended tax collection policy, tax debts from 2017 and earlier will no longer be actively pursued. 

However, it's important to note that this amendment applies to tax debts below one million guilders. Debts amounting to one million or more will still be subject to collection efforts, as well as assessments with recent deposits into third-party accounts. 

Tax compliance is a crucial aspect of the country's reform package. By the end of June, the State Secretary plans to address the slow progress of tax reforms in greater detail, highlighting the importance of implementing effective measures.
