WILLEMSTAD - The Monument Council of Curaçao, led by Chairman Ir. Michael Newton, has requested the Minister of Spatial Planning and Environment (VVRP) to pay attention to the establishment of a heritage and archaeological heritage office. This request comes after persistent organizational and personnel issues within the Ministry of VVRP regarding monument management and conservation.
Since the abolition of the independent Monument Bureau in 2010 and the transfer of its tasks to the Ministry of VVRP, a significant loss of expertise and efficiency in the field of heritage has been observed. The Monument Council proposes to restore these functions under the Fundashon Monumento, which would result in an integrated approach and better service. The goal is to improve heritage care on the island and ensure a more informed and efficient handling of matters such as restoration permits and monument protection.
