WILLEMSTAD — A total of 1,870 students from 24 schools across Curaçao began their final central exams today for various educational tracks: preparatory secondary vocational education (VSBO), senior general secondary education (HAVO), and pre-university education (VWO). The exams, which run through the end of May, mark a major milestone in the academic journey of these young students, following months of preparation by schools, students, parents, the Center of Expertise for Testing & Exams (ETE), and the Education Inspectorate.
The largest group of candidates is enrolled in VSBO, with nearly 1,200 students spread across three tracks: 218 in the Praktisch Basisgerichte Leerweg (PBL), 337 in the Praktisch Kadergerichte Leerweg (PKL), and 630 in the Theoretische Kadergerichte Leerweg (TKL). The central exams for this group began today with the subject Papiamentu and will continue until Thursday, May 22, covering subjects such as Dutch, English, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics.
For HAVO and VWO, there are 543 and 142 candidates respectively. The HAVO exams also started today with Papiamentu, followed by subjects including History, Physics, English, and Spanish. VWO students will take similar subjects, concluding on Monday, May 26 with the Spanish exam.
Rising Numbers in Vocational Track
In total, 15 VSBO schools, 8 HAVO schools, and 7 VWO schools on the island are participating in this year's exams. Notably, the number of candidates in VSBO has increased compared to 2024, particularly in the PKL and TKL tracks, while VWO saw a slight decline from 158 to 142 students.
According to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, a minimum of twelve years of schooling—from primary to secondary education—forms a solid foundation for the future of young people. The Minister emphasized the importance of support from parents, teachers, and the broader community in helping students succeed. A safe and positive learning environment is key to better performance and greater confidence.
The ETE is responsible for the development, translation, distribution, and standardization of the exams. The first exam period ends on May 26, and results will be announced no later than June 10. For exams sourced from the Netherlands, including those for HAVO, VWO, and parts of VSBO-TKL, final grading guidelines will be published by June 12.
