More space needed for fishermen at Playa Piskadó

WILLEMSTAD - Fishermen need more space at Playa Piskadó. On Sunday, the fishermen expressed their concerns to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas, who is also the Minister of Nature and Environment, about the difficulty of carrying out their profession. This was announced by the ministry.

Pisas, along with the ministry, visited the beach on Sunday to observe the large numbers of tourists visiting Piskadó and the traffic situation. Fishermen informed the ministry that due to the large numbers of visitors, people no longer come to the beach to buy fish.

The tourist developments on the beach have put considerable pressure on the relationship between fishermen and tourism in recent years. The ministry aims to address the situation by creating more space for parked cars, allowing customers of fishermen and tourists to park in a controlled manner. A combination of measures will be implemented to assess the number of visitors to the beach and the traffic situation.

Fishermen and beach workers in Westpunt have been complaining about disturbances for years. In September 2023, the beach was temporarily closed to traffic. The parking situation was monitored by two guards. Only fishermen and workers were allowed to park their cars in the parking lot. Beachgoers were asked to park their cars in the designated parking lot near the church. Later, tourists were allowed to park at the beach again.
