Minister announces major changes in management Tax Department

WILLEMSTAD - In a press statement, Minister of Finance Javier Silvania announced that there will be a management team that will manage the Tax Inspectorate as well as the Receiver and the Tax Audit Office. This team will be responsible for the reorganization and modernization of the Tax and Customs Administration.

Silvania will soon announce the composition of this management team. Although it is not mentioned, this seems to be in line with the recommendations of the recent QuickScan Tax Authorities Curaçao.

The first advice, for the short term, is to implement central control; end the current two shifts and make one manager responsible”. The Cabinet of the Minister of Finance is now not talking about one manager, but about a management team for all sections of the tax authority.

The 'change of leadership', as Silvania calls it, will come at the expense of the current head of the Inspectorate. No name is mentioned, but everything shows that this is Jamila Isenia. The minister 'thanked' her for leading the Inspectorate over the past few years.

According to Silvania, she was confronted with various challenges. Such as the constantly changing visions and priorities of previous ministers, a shortage of funds and manpower, the fire at the Tax Office and the consequences of the covid pandemic. “All this put a lot of pressure on an organization that is important to society.”

The minister has requested Isenia to stay on and to contribute with her expertise as a 'ruling inspector', described by the Cabinet as a very important function for the commercial financial sector of Curaçao. Reportedly, the reaction of the staff was outraged. The communiqué does not mention anything about the director, Alfonso Trona, and that also applies to director Sherwin Casper of the BAB Foundation (Tax Accountants Bureau).
