WILLEMSTAD - A former helpdesk employee of the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) has committed, what authorities called, a large-scale fraud. “We are talking about a large sum of money in this case,” said an authority close to the investigation. Curaçao Chronicle has not been able to verify the amount involved.
It concerns aid that was intended for the less fortunate, but which the employee in question managed to deposit into a personal bank account through a trick. The employee was responsible for assessing benefit claims. The applicants subsequently heard nothing more from the ministry. After several complaints, the ministry started an investigation which has now been taken over by the police after a complaint was filed.
