THE HAGUE - The Dutch government emphasizes that every region matters, including the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. In the King's Speech, this principle was linked to the Caribbean territories.
A key approach is providing more space for regional identity and strengths by involving public service officials early in the policy-making process.
Other proposals focus on an agenda of good governance and legal certainty, which naturally extends to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. This is presented as the foundation for working together on future prosperity and well-being, according to the King's message.
This aligns with the new cabinet of Dick Schoof, following the previous King's Speech from Rutte IV’s government, which stated that the cabinet is working with the islands toward a future-proof economy and high-quality governance.
Last Year
The 2023 King's Speech focused primarily on the Dutch slavery apology and the King's visit to the islands. It was specifically mentioned that extra funds would be made available to combat poverty in the Caribbean Netherlands.
However, concrete proposals regarding the relationship with the islands were absent in this year's King's Speech.
