WILLEMSTAD - Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) presented a concrete action plan yesterday during a roundtable discussion focused on improving the protection of undocumented migrants and implementing Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which prohibits inhumane treatment.
The action plan emphasizes frequent and structural collaboration between lawyers, government agencies, and civil society organizations. It includes practical measures such as legal support, policy adjustments, and awareness campaigns.
Collaboration
The action plan is the result of an intensive day of dialogue and cooperation during a meeting at the Marriott Hotel & Beach Resort. Participants, including lawyers, representatives from immigration services, and the Ministry of Justice, shared experiences and brainstormed solutions to the challenges surrounding migration and human rights in Curaçao. Simone de Brabander, director of HRDC, described the event as “a crucial step toward practical improvements through collaboration.”
The session began with a presentation on Article 3 of the ECHR to establish a common foundation. A panel discussion followed, where various perspectives were shared, leading to valuable insights. One of the highlights of the day was a moot court, where participants temporarily swapped roles to better understand each other’s challenges.
In working groups, participants then focused on specific solutions, such as strengthening legal support for migrants, improving the handling of migration cases, and launching awareness campaigns focused on human rights.
Future
The action plan forms the foundation for further interdisciplinary cooperation and practical solutions. HRDC is working on a report that will document the results and future plans. This marks an important step in addressing the complex issues surrounding migration and human rights in Curaçao. According to De Brabander, this initiative offers hope for structural improvements for vulnerable groups in society.
