WILLEMSTAD - In Curaçao, Venezuelan migrants who do not have a residence status are pressured by the authorities to buy a ticket to return to Venezuela via a third country.
That is what the Curaçao human rights organization Human Rights Caribbean says. The borders between the ABC islands and Venezuela have been closed since the beginning of this year, so that so-called "deportation flights" have come to an end. Pending their departure, migrants are being held in the foreigners’ barracks on the prison grounds.
Human Rights Caribbean reports that the living conditions of the captured refugees are below the minimum. For example, there is insufficient food. “Human Rights Caribbean still makes great efforts to provide assistance at the request of the detainees. Hopefully that will be honored soon.”
The human rights organization welcomes the insistence of the Dutch parliament. The Undersecretary for Kingdom Relations, Raymond Knops, again asked a series of probing questions about the reception of Venezuelans in Curaçao and the Dutch responsibility for this. “The letter clearly demonstrates a growing awareness in the Netherlands of the human rights situation of Venezuelan refugees and migrants on our ABC islands. It also demonstrates the notion of joint Kingdom responsibility.”
