Government Approves Key National Measures on Food Security, Brionplein Management and CARICOM Membership

WILLEMSTAD - The Council of Ministers approved several important decisions on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, covering food security, public-space management, regional integration and nuclear safety agreements. The resolutions reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national resilience and international cooperation.

Interministerial Project Group on Food Security Established

The Council of Ministers has agreed to create an Interministerial Project Group on Food Security, an initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development. The group will focus on boosting Curaçao’s food security and improving coordination between ministries responsible for agriculture, economic policy, public health and social development. The government says the project group will play a key role in developing long-term strategies to reduce dependence on food imports and enhance local production.

New Brionplein Management Agreement for 2025–2028

The Council approved a new management agreement for Brionplein between the Government of Curaçao and the Sosiedat di Komersiantenan di Otrobanda (SKO). The agreement covers the period 2025–2028 and aims to ensure structured management, maintenance and use of one of Willemstad’s most iconic public spaces.
The Minister of Traffic, Transportation and Spatial Planning (VVRP) has been authorized to sign the agreement on behalf of the government.

Curaçao Moves Toward Associated CARICOM Membership

The government also approved instructions for the Minister Plenipotentiary to vote in favor of a treaty between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) regarding the terms for Curaçao’s associated membership. The vote will take place at the Kingdom Council of Ministers meeting on 21 November.

Associated membership would give Curaçao broader access to regional markets, policy collaboration and economic development opportunities.

Approval of Nuclear Safety Agreements

Finally, the Council authorized the Minister Plenipotentiary to support the signing of additional protocols and treaties on nuclear safety during the Kingdom Council of Ministers meeting. These agreements aim to strengthen the Kingdom’s international commitments to radiation protection, nuclear oversight and emergency preparedness.

The series of decisions demonstrates the government’s focus on enhancing national security, improving governance of public areas, expanding regional cooperation and strengthening technical safety frameworks.
