Godett wants Cicely van der Dijs out of prison by appeal to the king

WILLEMSTAD - Anthony Godett is making every effort to get Cicely van der Dijs released. He calls on King Willem Alexander to pardon the former wife of former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte.

Van der Dijs is serving a prison sentence for money laundering in relation to the official corruption by Schotte in his time as first Prime Minister of Curaçao.

Schotte was eventually sentenced to three years in prison. A sentence he has now served. Van der Dijs was sentenced to fifteen months, six of which were conditional. She was detained in August last year.

Van der Dijs is the mother of two young children and owner of the Vanddis gas stations, a chain that, with 220 employees, is a major player in the Curaçao market. Godett calls on the current Minister of Justice Shalten Hato of the MFK, Schotte's party, to work on the request for clemency.

According to former FOL party leader Godett, a pardon would be a nice gesture for Van der Dijs, but it should also apply to anyone currently detained on the island for relatively minor offenses.

He is inspired by the president of El Salvador, Nayid Bukele, who released 3000 people early from prison.

Godett has been active in Curaçao politics for decades. In 2004 he was leader of the FOL, the largest party in Curaçao at the time. He wanted to become prime minister, but was involved in a fraud case and had to go to prison. At the time, he pushed his sister Mirna Louisa-Godett forward. She was Antillean Prime Minister for nine months.
