Extra financial resources for the consequences of rainfall

WILLEMSTAD - According to Minister Zita Jesus-Leito, funds have been made available to clean the overflow ditches. Funds are also available if emergency repairs must be carried out on dilapidated buildings in the city center.

The Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning has made agreements about this with the Minister of Finance Kenneth Gijsbertha. Because of the corona crisis, all spending was actually frozen, she says.

“But now a way has been found to obtain the necessary funds,” says Jesus-Leito.

According to the minister, the population should not be concerned. Due to the heavy rainfall of recent days, cleaning the overflow ditches has become extra urgent again. Several houses in Otrobanda and Punda have also collapsed due to heavy rainfall. There is a chance that more buildings will crumble. The minister emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the owners to keep the houses in good condition. But if there is a threat to the population, the government will intervene.
