EFO 2024 kicks off for nearly 1700 students in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent May 1, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Starting today, the Final Test for Fundamental Education (EFO) begins for nearly 1700 students in Curaçao. This important test, which runs until May 8, is being administered for the fourteenth time and is crucial for the completion of primary education. The Expertise Center for Tests & Exams, part of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport, coordinates the test.

This year, 52 schools are participating, with a total of 83 classes. The test consists of components in Papiamento, Dutch, and Mathematics, divided into 270 questions. Students can choose to take the Mathematics component in Dutch or Papiamentu, depending on the instructional language of their school.

The results of the EFO will be provided to the schools in mid-June.

The EFO assesses students on core skills such as spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension in both Papiamento and Dutch. For Mathematics, skills such as geometry and proportions are tested. All test components use a multiple-choice format with four answer options.

This year, 1595 students will take the Mathematics test in Dutch and 72 in Papiamentu. These 72 students are distributed across four different schools. The careful preparation of the test is based on the core objectives of Fundamental Education, established by the ministry.

Future

The results of the EFO are essential for determining the further education of the students. The school boards, subsidized by the government, will use the results to provide advice to the students. These recommendations will determine the students' future educational direction.

This annual evaluation marks a crucial step in the educational development of students in Curaçao. With the support of education experts and the involvement of schools, the EFO provides a valuable measurement of students' progress.
