Education Official Urges Government to Make Teaching Salaries More Attractive

WILLEMSTAD – In light of the ongoing teacher shortage in Curaçao, the Ministry of Education should take urgent steps to make the teaching profession more financially attractive. That is the view of Royla Pierre, Director of the Catholic School Board.

Pierre emphasized that many qualified professionals are opting to work in the private sector, where salaries are significantly higher. By increasing teachers' pay, more individuals may be encouraged to choose a career in education, she argued. Pierre expressed hope that this proposal will be seriously considered by the Council of Ministers.

Currently, many young professionals are leaving the island to work in the Netherlands or Bonaire, where teaching conditions and compensation are reportedly more favorable. According to Pierre, Curaçao is not able to compete with those salaries at this time, making it difficult to retain and attract qualified educators.

The call comes amid growing concern about the long-term impact of the teacher shortage on the island’s education system.
