Education Must Offer Opportunities: Growing Social Issues Threaten the Future of Our Youth

Local | By Press release February 10, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Pisas II Cabinet has failed to prioritize the future of the next generation and the well-being of today's children. The most pressing and urgent challenge in Curaçao’s education system is the increasing number of students facing social issues such as poverty, unstable home environments, and mental health struggles. MAN-PIN recognizes the urgent need to address this crisis and proposes long-term solutions to ensure that all children have the same opportunities to grow into happy and successful individuals within our community.

A recent report, The State of Primary Education 2024, revealed that 2,739 students require specialized care in primary schools. Schools themselves have indicated a critical need for remedial teachers and social workers. Alarmingly, in the last school year alone, 935 students needed a remedial teacher, but there were only seven working across all schools. This results in an impossible average of 133 students per remedial teacher.

These challenges not only affect the students themselves but also place a significant burden on teachers and diminish the overall effectiveness of the education system. Children dealing with severe social problems often struggle to focus in class and lack the emotional and psychological support necessary for success. The shortage of qualified personnel in schools forces teachers to manage these complex issues without the necessary resources, training, or support systems.

These educational challenges have been known for years. However, the current government has taken two years just to assess the situation, and now, after extensive delays, they are merely producing more reports that highlight the same well-documented problems. MAN-PIN refuses to waste more time.

MAN-PIN’s Vision and Action Plan

MAN-PIN is committed to taking immediate action with a comprehensive plan focused on five key areas:

Expanding the Role of Social Workers in Schools and Neighborhoods: More professional social workers will be placed in schools and communities to support students and families facing social challenges. These professionals will work closely with teachers to provide tailored interventions and create a safer, more sustainable educational environment.

Mental Health Services for Students: Schools will have accessible mental health services to address issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. Early intervention programs will help students manage these challenges effectively.

Teacher Training for Social-Emotional Issues: Educators will receive specialized training to equip them with the skills needed to manage classrooms with diverse social needs.

Schools as Safe Spaces: Schools will be strengthened as secure environments where children feel protected and supported. This includes anti-bullying programs, inclusive policies, and guaranteed access to basic needs such as nutritious meals and school supplies.

Support for Vulnerable Families: Programs will be developed to provide direct support to families in crisis, helping them stabilize their home environments for the benefit of their children.

MAN-PIN is committed to addressing the root causes of the social challenges affecting Curaçao’s youth. By working together with educators, families, and the community, we can build a holistic education system that provides equal opportunities for all children and secures a brighter future for our island.
