THE HAGUE - The standing parliamentary committee for defense wants to know more about the role of the Coast Guard in picking up Venezuelans at sea.
In particular, there are questions about how the Coastguard deals with asylum applications and compliance with human rights. The committee wants to know how far the duty of care of the Coast Guard extends when Venezuelans apply for asylum.
In 2018 around 240 Venezuelans were intercepted in the waters of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The figures for 2019 show a slight increase.
