Dutch Minister of Legal Protection visits Curaçao prison

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Legal Protection, Mr. Franc Weerwind from the Netherlands, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Shalten Hato, together with other collaborators from the Netherlands and Curaçao, recently conducted a working visit to the Curaçao Detention and Correctional Center (SDKK).

The purpose of this visit was to familiarize themselves with the management team of SDKK and gain an understanding of the current developments and challenges within the institution. All of this is part of the ongoing discussions at the Kingdom level to establish a new prison.

On this occasion, the interim director of the prison, Mr. Richenald Ricardo, provided a visual presentation illustrating the various issues and challenges related to the outdated infrastructure of the prison, as well as the security and rehabilitation programs. All of this information is based on reports from different organizations advocating for the rights of detainees and the community.

Following the presentation, a tour of the institution took place, allowing the delegation to visit some blocks that have not been renovated since 2000. They also visited the Vocational Building, where many of the rehabilitation programs take place. Here, they had the opportunity to engage in conversations with some of the clients at SDKK. Lastly, the delegation visited the area for undocumented individuals, known as the Curaçao Foreigners Reception and Detention Center (VODC).

The Ministry of Justice and the SDKK Management reflect positively on this visit, considering it a successful one, with the hope that Curaçao will soon have a new prison facility.
