Debate on 'mutual arrangements' to continue next week

THE HAGUE - The debate of the Second Chamber Committee for Kingdom Relations with State Secretary Van Huffelen regarding 'mutual arrangements' will continue next week in the form of a two-minute debate in the plenary hall.

This is at the request of VVD Member of Parliament Roelien Kamminga. She is displeased with the fact that Van Huffelen has dropped the condition that Aruba is only eligible for refinancing of the liquidity loan if the Kingdom Act Aruba Financial Supervision becomes a reality.

In 2021, the Netherlands and Aruba reached an agreement to convert the current Aruba Financial Supervision National Ordinance into a Kingdom Act. The draft law was submitted to the parliaments with the approval of the Wever-Croes cabinet in February of last year. Since then, the negotiations have been at a standstill: the Aruban government has reconsidered and no longer wants a Kingdom Act.

The threat from Van Huffelen that there would be no discussion about extending the liquidity loan expiring on October 10th did not impress Oranjestad. In the committee debate, the State Secretary surprised the Members of Parliament by announcing that she is willing to refinance the loan even without the Kingdom Act Aruba Financial Supervision, albeit at a market-based interest rate instead of a low one. It has become clear that Aruba is also not concerned about this.

The two-minute debate allows parties to submit motions. Kamminga has announced that she will make use of this opportunity. It is unknown whether other Members of Parliament are considering submitting a motion.
