WILLEMSTAD - Even before the cyber attack on the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten (CBCS) on September 2 this year, it was discovered that there was unauthorized access to the CBCS systems. Minister of Finance Javier Silvania gave this response to questions from Parliament. The information comes from the bank.
The Central Bank reported on September 5 that there was a cyberattack. Now it appears that there was unauthorized access. Silvania indicates that it is unclear when the first infiltration has taken place. The investigation is still ongoing.
The minister indicates that the payment system of Curaçao and Sint Maarten is separate from the network of the CBCs. "The cyberattack has no impact on the value of the guilder," said the minister.
Curaçao has no legislation aimed at cyber attacks. A cyberattack is a global problem. "The attacks are a major risk to our country," said Silvania.
