Curaçao’s Ombudsman warns children about online dangers on Universal Children’s Day

WILLEMSTAD - Keursly Concincion, Ombudsman and Children’s Ombudsman of Curaçao, highlighted the risks children face online during a speech marking the 35th anniversary of Universal Children’s Day. The event, held yesterday at the Children’s Museum Curaçao, focused on raising global awareness of children’s fundamental rights.

Concincion emphasized that every child has the right to nutritious food, clean drinking water, quality education, safe housing, protection from abuse, and time for leisure and recreation. “It doesn’t matter where you live, which school you attend, whether your parents are wealthy or not, or if you’re a boy or a girl. Children always and everywhere have the same rights, and we, as adults, have the responsibility to ensure these rights are upheld,” he stated.

The Ombudsman also addressed the growing impact of the digital world on children’s lives. With the internet becoming an integral part of their daily activities, Concincion warned of the potential dangers lurking online. “Gaming and social media can be great fun. The internet is also an excellent resource for schoolwork or creative pursuits at home. Unfortunately, the digital world has its darker sides,” he said.

He cautioned that children are increasingly exposed to cyberbullying, hateful language, and violent content. Concincion also stressed the risks posed by online predators attempting to target children.

One of the key concerns raised was the excessive screen time among children, which Concincion believes warrants serious attention. As the digital landscape continues to expand, the Children’s Ombudsman urged parents, educators, and policymakers to work together to ensure children can safely navigate the online world while protecting their rights.

The Universal Children’s Day celebration served as a platform to reiterate the importance of safeguarding children’s well-being in both physical and digital spaces.
