Curaçao to Celebrate King's Day on April 26: Special Pay Rules for Workers Apply

WILLEMSTAD – This year, King's Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, instead of King Willem-Alexander's actual birthday on April 27. The shift has implications for workers, depending on their work schedule and collective labor agreement (CAO).

For employees without a fixed work schedule, the day is considered an official public holiday. If they are required to work, they are entitled to 250% of their normal pay—their regular wage plus a 150% bonus.

Employees with a fixed schedule who were not originally scheduled to work but are later required to do so also receive 250% of their salary. Those who are scheduled to work on King's Day as part of their normal roster will receive 200% of their salary, which includes a 100% holiday bonus.

Special rules also apply to workers under the so-called “Horeca Besluit” (Hospitality Sector Regulation). Whether they are asked or obligated to work on King's Day, they are entitled to 200% of their regular pay.

As King’s Day is an official public holiday, most sectors enforce special compensation arrangements for employees working on this day. Employers and employees are encouraged to review their collective labor agreements or internal company policies to understand how these rules apply to their specific situation.
