Curaçao to adjust the granting of social assistance benefits

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao is going to change the granting of social assistance benefits. According to the Ministry of Social Development (SOAW), the current system is not functioning. It is not yet clear what exactly will change. However, there will be more emphasis on reintegration into work.

For an adjustment, a change in the law is necessary, which is in line with today's reality, with an emphasis on reintegration with work in society. Social assistance is not an allowance that is given for life, according to Glenda Aniceta of the ministry. Someone who receives social assistance has to go through a process in which his or her chances in the labor market are increased.

SOAW will focus on young people in a separate pilot project. Youth unemployment among them is huge at 42 percent. Five hundred young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who are receiving social assistance have received a call to sign up for a compulsory program.
