Curaçao Launches ‘Positive Parenting’ Project to Support Families and Children

WILLEMSTAD – Parents in Curaçao will now receive greater support in raising their children, following the launch of the new “Positive Parenting” initiative by the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) on Thursday. The project introduces a new parenting vision and a comprehensive social map to guide families and professionals alike.

Secretary-General Glenda Aniceta (pictured) presented the initiative on behalf of Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia America-Francisca during an event in Willemstad, which was attended by local professionals and parents.

The new parenting vision is based on five core values: love, respect, trust, communication, and social resilience. The goal is to help parents raise children in a conscious and intentional way, so they grow into happy, independent, and resilient adults.

A Practical Tool: The Social Map

A key component of the project is the social map, which provides a clear overview of all available family support services on the island. It is designed to equip parents and professionals with the right knowledge and tools to foster children’s healthy development.

A dedicated Parenting Committee of seven organizations, including RKCS, PSI-Skuchami, and SOAW, will be responsible for implementing the project.

Rooted in Community Dialogues

The initiative traces its origins back to 2017, when community discussions with parents across Curaçao first highlighted the need for better parenting support. Since 2021, the Ministry has worked in close collaboration with UNICEF Netherlands to develop the project.

“With this vision and social map, we are working together toward a future where every child can grow up in an environment of love, trust, and safety,” the Ministry stated.

The Positive Parenting project represents a major step forward in strengthening families across Curaçao and promoting the well-being of the island’s next generation.
