WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Fire Department has officially presented the "Fire Service Coverage Plan Curaçao" to Minister of Justice Shalten Hato. The comprehensive plan will be submitted to the Council of Ministers in August 2025 for review and approval.
This marks the first formal update since 1995 and was developed in collaboration with fire service professionals from the Netherlands. The study focuses on two critical components: the fire coverage plan and a detailed risk profile for fire safety on the island.
Strategic Fire Station Positioning
The new plan outlines strategic recommendations for the positioning of the island’s four fire stations and the Fire Department’s headquarters. It also includes guidance on the necessary equipment and staffing required to respond effectively to different types of emergencies.
Designed to serve as a decision-making tool, the plan aims to support better allocation of resources and enhance the department’s operational efficiency.
Risk Profile and Future Preparedness
The accompanying risk profile identifies the most significant safety threats on the island and provides direction for prevention and mitigation strategies. Together, these documents are intended to strengthen the fire department’s preparedness for both current and emerging risks.
New Station in Montaña
Experts presenting the report also confirmed that the recent decision to build a new fire station in Montaña was a sound one. The location aligns with findings from the study, further validating the government's strategy to improve response times and safety coverage in that area.
The updated coverage plan is a major step forward in modernizing Curaçao’s emergency response infrastructure and ensuring that the fire department is well-equipped to protect the island’s communities in the years ahead.
