Curaçao elections scheduled for March 21, 2025

WILLEMSTAD - The next elections for the parliament of Curaçao are scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2025. This marks the end of the full four-year term of the current Pisas cabinet. The announcement was made by Minister Ornelio 'Kid' Martina of Governance, Planning, and Public Service during the discussion of the 2024 budget.

The deadline for the submission of candidate lists is set for Tuesday, January 21, 2025. All parties wishing to participate in the elections must submit their candidate list on this date.

Parties currently without representation in the parliament must first participate in a preliminary election. According to the schedule, the new parliament will convene on Sunday, May 11, but this date is likely to be moved to Monday, May 12.

Minister Martina announced the election date in response to questions from Member of Parliament Gwendell Mercelina about recent developments at the Electoral Council. Martina explained that the Electoral Council will receive an additional amount of two million Antillean guilders in 2024 for its budget to initiate preparations for the 2025 elections.

The last elections were held on March 19, 2021. During these elections, the MFK party won five seats and received four residual seats, totaling nine seats. MFK then formed a government together with the PNP, which won a total of four seats.

Together, these two parties have a majority of thirteen out of the 21 seats in the Curaçao Parliament.
