Curaçao Businessman Faces 12-Year Sentence for Drug Smuggling

WILLEMSTAD - The Public Prosecutor has demanded a 12-year prison sentence for Curaçao businessman Marvin Th. for his involvement in smuggling a total of 265 kilograms of cocaine from Curaçao to the Netherlands. According to the prosecution, Th. was part of a criminal organization and organized six drug shipments using the encrypted messaging platform "Sky ECC."

During the court hearing, the defendant remained silent and invoked his right to remain silent, despite strong evidence against him, including chats, photos, and encrypted phones found at his residence. Prosecutors claim that Th. was systematically involved in sending containers in which drugs were repeatedly discovered.

The investigation is part of the international "Themis" operation, which included deciphering information from Sky ECC. The prosecutor highlighted the suspicious frequency of drug seizures in containers sent under Th.'s name to the Netherlands. According to the Public Prosecutor, it is unlikely that this is mere coincidence.

The defense disputes all accusations, arguing that there is no concrete evidence against their client. The defense attorneys have requested an acquittal, emphasizing that the Sky messages do not sufficiently demonstrate actual involvement. The case will resume in three weeks with a verdict.
