Curaçao budgetary instruction postponed due to the Venezuela situation

WILLEMSTAD - The impact of the poor economic situation of Venezuela on Curaçao is the reason that the budgetary instruction hanging over the island is postponed. Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath said that on Tuesday. "A clue is not on the table, but we have more time to come up with a plan," said Rhuggenaath.

The Financial Supervision Board (CFT) advised the Kingdom Council of Ministers (RMR) this month to give Curaçao a designation. The RMR still has to decide whether to follow that advice. However, the last time the RMR met, Thursday last week, Curaçao was not on the agenda.

'Extraordinary circumstances'

The Prime Minister is given more time because he relies on "extraordinary circumstances". He is referring to the impact of the poor economic situation of Venezuela on the island. “We asked for a delay for this and we succeeded. We are given more time to discuss our growth strategy in terms of content, but also financial management to ensure that we are on the right track, "says Rhuggenaath.

The income and expenditure of the country of Curaçao are not in balance according to the Cft and the financial management is not in order. The government has a budget deficit of 127 million guilders and this must be made up.
