Curaçao Authorities Emphasize Building Safety Following Deadly Collapse in Dominican Republic

WILLEMSTAD – Following a tragic incident at the "Jet Set Festival" in the Dominican Republic—where the roof of a building collapsed, resulting in 221 deaths—concerns about building safety have echoed around the world, including on Curaçao, according to a statement from the government.

In response, the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation, and Urban Planning stressed that the responsibility for a building’s safety lies with the property owner or user. The ministry emphasized the importance of proper maintenance and regular inspections in accordance with legal standards to prevent such catastrophic events.

"Regular maintenance and inspections in line with legal requirements are essential to avoid risks," the ministry stated.

The Spatial Planning and Development Department (ROP) added that it is available to advise and support building owners on safety-related matters and compliance with regulations.

The government’s statement aims to raise awareness and encourage proactive action from property owners across the island to ensure the structural integrity of buildings and public safety.
