Concerns raised over waste management in Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - Ana-Maria Pauletta, a Member of Parliament representing the opposition party PAR, has brought attention to a pressing issue concerning waste management in Curaçao. Over the past week, Pauletta has received numerous complaints from residents regarding delays in waste collection by Selikor, the island's waste management company.

According to Pauletta, the situation has caused significant inconvenience and raised concerns within the community. Complaints range from overflowing bins to garbage bags left uncollected outside homes, prompting residents to resort to illegal dumping in wilderness areas or even resorting to burning waste. Pauletta stressed the importance of addressing this issue promptly to avoid further environmental and public health risks.

"Improperly handled waste not only creates unsightly conditions but also attracts stray animals, posing additional risks," Pauletta stated.

In response to these concerns, Pauletta has raised several questions to the government. Firstly, she has requested information from the Minister regarding Selikor's challenges in waste collection in specific neighborhoods and the underlying reasons for these difficulties. Additionally, Pauletta has questioned what measures Selikor is implementing to compensate citizens affected by repeated failures in waste collection.

Furthermore, Pauletta has inquired whether the Ministry of Public Health (GMN) has allocated additional subsidies to Selikor to improve waste collection services.

Pauletta concluded her letter to the Minister by proposing the organization of a summit on waste management. This summit would provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to come together, discuss concerns, and develop a unified strategy to address the pressing issue of waste management in Curaçao.
