Concerns in The Hague Over ‘Violent Rhetoric’ of Venezuelan Regime

THE HAGUE Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caspar Veldkamp, has expressed deep concerns regarding the situation in Venezuela as President Nicolás Maduro prepares to take office for his third term on Friday. In the lead-up to the inauguration, Veldkamp noted an increase in the regime’s "violent rhetoric" and voiced alarm over recent reports of arrests, as he shared on social media platform X.

Opposition leaders in Venezuela have called for mass protests on Thursday, further heightening the political tension. In response, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a negative travel advisory for large parts of Venezuela, advising citizens to only travel to the remaining areas if absolutely necessary.

The Dutch government also warned that Dutch nationals in Venezuela face increased risks due to arbitrary arrests. The Ministry emphasized that there is little it can do to assist if a Dutch citizen is detained, and the likelihood of receiving a fair trial is slim. The Ministry's advice includes avoiding crowds, demonstrations, and refraining from recording videos of such events.

In a notable move, Minister Veldkamp provided shelter to opposition leader González Urrutia at the Dutch embassy in Caracas last summer. Urrutia later fled to Spain but is expected to return to Venezuela this week in an attempt to prevent Maduro's inauguration.
