CMC sounds the alarm: "situation requires clear measures"

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has sounded the alarm about a shortage of staff and the lack of measures against the spread of Covid-19. Corona infections are increasing considerably, but the government has not yet intervened. Medical director Ingemar Markies expresses his concerns about the situation.

Markies expects the number of hospital admissions to rise within two weeks. The CMC has therefore approached Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas. The capacity of the intensive care unit has already been scaled up. Under normal circumstances, the CMC can man eight to nine ICU beds and provide intensive care. There are currently fourteen people in the ICU, eight of which are corona patients.

“It is always the same people who have to pick themselves up, again and again, and have to provide shelter under very difficult circumstances, while measures taken in advance by the government could have reduced the pressure on care,” the medical director indicated. The CMC is also struggling with a staff shortage in the emergency room due to the increasing infections. If it is up to Markies, stricter measures will be taken before the new year. “It is an extremely worrying situation that requires clear measures.”
