WILLEMSTAD – Dr. Ingemar Merkies, Medical Director and neurologist at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), has announced his resignation. The 61-year-old physician will officially step down from his role on December 31, 2025, the hospital confirmed.
Merkies submitted his resignation to the CMC Board of Directors, though no reason has been publicly disclosed for his departure.
In addition to serving as medical director, Merkies holds a position as a special professor of functional clinimetrics. He was appointed at CMC on October 1, 2019, just ahead of the hospital’s official opening in November of that year.
His exit comes at a time of internal unrest at CMC, with reports earlier this year highlighting a tense working environment. The discord is believed to stem in part from ongoing discussions around the structure of medical specialist services and the implementation of the National Ordinance on the Standardization of Top Incomes (LNT).
No successor has yet been named to take over the role of medical director following Merkies’ departure. The hospital is expected to announce further details in the coming weeks as it prepares for a leadership transition.
