Aspiring CUR- and ARUMIL students complete their training in Fort Amsterdam

WILLEMSTAD - The basic training of the Curaçao and Aruban militia was completed yesterday with loud clapping and speeches by Prime Minister Rhuggenaath, Deputy Commander of the Navy, Jan Willem Boone and Major of the Navy Christ van Dinteren.

This week they completed the final exercise (FINEX).

The FINEX is traditionally closed with a final march of 25 kilometers. The militants wear their personal equipment and weapons. The last kilometers went through Otrobanda and over the ferry bridge, after which the militants were traditionally greeted inside the Fort Amsterdam. This symbolizes the close bond between the islands, the militias and defense.

The march ended in the courtyard of Fort Amsterdam, in the presence of Governor Lucille George Wout and Prime Minister Rhuggenaath.

There the militants exchanged their caps for a well-deserved beret. The speeches emphasized the role of the militants for Curaçao and Aruba in safety, but also pride and achievement. "The training is not easy. With this you have really achieved a performance," says Van Dinteren. In October 2018, 30 boys started training as a militiamen. After an intensive training of more than eleven months, 22 students marched on the ferry bridge on Thursday.

Formation

The Elementary Military Training (EMF) is a basic training that lasts eleven months. The first phase is elementary education. Central to this are the basic skills (skills & drills) at the individual level. The militants in training learn ranks, classes and Self-Help Comrades-Help. In addition, the military discipline is taught, and the boys are taught how to use military weapons. From this phase the step is made to combat training. The third and final phase consists of securing and monitoring.
