WILLEMSTAD - On Friday afternoon, nine Venezuelan women tried to escape from the foreigners’ barracks of the SDDK prison. The group was able to force the fence a few minutes after a control round by the guards, after which they tried to flee.
Two of them reached the fence but were caught as they tried to escape. According to prison warden Urny Floran, prison staff soon regained control of the situation.
The escape attempt comes just after a massive outbreak last week from the men's wing of the barracks. 21 Venezuelans then managed to escape. Two guards were then put on hold.
Justice Minister Quincy Girigorie then set up a committee of inquiry to report how it is possible that Venezuelans were able to escape.
