WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Education is allocating an additional 1.5 million guilders to combat heat in schools. This amount will be used to install air conditioners in classrooms where students are affected by high temperatures. Previously, the ministry had pledged one million guilders, but that amount was insufficient.
The ministry's climate committee, which was specifically established to address the heat issue, met yesterday with school principals and unions to discuss measures taken so far and how the extra funds can be effectively used. Some schools have already invested in fans, coolers, and tree planting. A few have also modified uniforms to make students more comfortable in the heat.
The plan to install split air conditioners in classrooms has received broad support from school principals, who emphasize that this is the most effective way to control classroom temperatures.
The installation of the air conditioners will occur in phases, but the ministry assures that all schools will eventually be equipped. The decision on which schools and classrooms receive air conditioners first is left to the school boards.
Energy Consumption
A key concern is the increased energy consumption caused by the air conditioners. The climate committee is currently reviewing how to manage the costs of electricity upgrades. The existing heat protocol for schools is also being revised to determine if adjustments are needed.
