WILLEMSTAD - Almost all new COVID-19 infections are caused by the British corona variant. That is what epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth said at the press conference yesterday.
Of the 54 last positive samples that were tested, 53 turned out to be of British descent. The British mutation of the virus is a lot more contagious than the original virus.
According to Gerstenbluth, this means that this lockdown cannot be compared to that of a year ago. The chance of a rapid fall in infection figures is now a lot lower due to the British variant.
The government has previously announced that the current lockdown will last until at least April 30th. By then, the figures should show whether the measures can be relaxed.
