Influenza Cases at CMC Decline, No Post-Carnival Surge

WILLEMSTAD – The number of influenza patients at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has significantly decreased, easing concerns of a post-carnival spike in cases. Previously, 16 people were hospitalized with flu symptoms, but the anticipated surge following the carnival festivities did not materialize.

To prevent the spread of the virus, CMC implemented several precautionary measures. Patients diagnosed with Influenza A and B were separated, with Influenza A cases placed in isolated areas since that strain accounted for the majority of infections.

Prior to the busiest weeks of the carnival season, the hospital issued public health recommendations, urging people to maintain proper hygiene, including frequent handwashing, using disposable tissues, and staying home if experiencing flu symptoms.

Notably, the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) did not issue a public warning about the flu outbreak, a decision that contrasts with the preventive measures taken by CMC. Despite the lack of an official advisory, the hospital’s proactive approach appears to have helped curb a wider outbreak.
