WILLEMSTAD – Health organizations worldwide have recently issued a warning regarding an increase in yellow fever cases in South America. Areas that previously had no reported cases of yellow fever are now seeing infections for the first time, including parts of Brazil and Colombia. In response, the Colombian government has declared a national state of emergency due to the rising number of yellow fever cases.
Curaçao’s Ministry of Health is urging travelers to get vaccinated if they are planning to visit areas at risk for the disease. The countries in the region where yellow fever is a concern include: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, and Venezuela.
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne infection. On average, 10% of infected individuals die from the disease. While there is no treatment for yellow fever, an effective vaccine is available that provides protection.
The Ministry of Health reminds travelers to risk areas or countries with registered yellow fever cases that they must get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure. Vaccination is available at the Public Health Service of Curaçao (formerly GGD), located at Piscaderaweg #49. An appointment is required for vaccination.
