WILLEMSTAD - The Moderno Chicken Farm has been prohibited from dumping animal waste and chicken manure on the waste heap next to its facility. This decision was handed down by the court yesterday. The judge imposed a penalty of 10,000 guilders per violation, up to a maximum of 1 million guilders.
Residents of the nearby Sunset Heights neighborhood have long complained about foul odors and fly infestations caused by the farm. Egg’s Farm Moderno has been operating its poultry business at the same location for over 34 years and has faced multiple legal challenges over the years. However, this marks the first time that the court has imposed a financial penalty on the farm.
According to the court's ruling, the farm must cease waste dumping next to its facility, as it constitutes "unlawful nuisance" to the surrounding community. Moderno is now required to collaborate with the government and the waste management company Selikor to find a suitable location for disposing of the chicken manure that does not disturb residents. The farm is also forbidden from storing the waste on its own property and has been given a one-month deadline to resolve the issue.
