WILLEMSTAD – A confidential maintenance report from CMC Vastgoed reveals that serious neglect at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) is putting daily healthcare services at risk. The report highlights that essential systems—including elevators, escalators, ventilation systems, and backup power supplies—are not receiving adequate maintenance due to liquidity problems at CMC Vastgoed.
The consequences could be severe, with potential disruptions to surgeries, patient transport, and even critical medical treatments. Several of the installations are labeled as having a “high impact on healthcare,” underlining their importance to the hospital's operations.
The underlying cause of the maintenance shortfall is a lack of payments from CMC Exploitatie to CMC Vastgoed, largely attributed to an insufficient national healthcare budget. In response, CMC Vastgoed has issued a formal warning to the hospital's executive board, sounding the alarm over the potential dangers if the situation remains unresolved.
At the government level, discussions are ongoing about a restructuring plan. Acting Minister of Health, Environment and Nature and Finance, Javier Silvania (MFK), is directly involved in the talks. While a temporary rent reduction has been agreed upon, a sustainable long-term solution has yet to be reached.
In the meantime, CMC Vastgoed is advocating for the recapitalization of a loan from the government of Curaçao to ease the financial strain and allow critical maintenance activities to resume.
Without swift and decisive intervention, the healthcare services at Curaçao’s largest medical facility may face serious disruption.
